Scratchboard is a very exacting art. The surface consists of a stiff backing that is finely coated with white China clay and topped with a smooth layer of India Ink. The artist, using fine etching tools, scratches away the ink, exposing the white layer. This medium is particularly successful for wildlife renderings as fine lines can beproduced to represent hair, fur, feathers, etc. This technique takes a great deal of time and demands patience. There is little room for error, as once a line is etched it is difficult to completely re-ink it. In some works, colored ink is used for accent.
